An option for Milan?
In this years silliest of seasons, Milan having been linked to a number of high profile stars such as Luis Fabiano, Huntelaar, Adebayor and the list goes on.
Thanks to Uncle Fester, Milan have not only failed to sign these players but have failed miserably giving Milan the unsavoury reputation as the poor giant of European football.
But, possibly this could be a good thing. With Milan burning bridges with every below market offer it may just be that soon there will be no options left. This will force, hopefully, Galliani and co to look at alternatives. Perhaps signing a player who is essentially an attacking player but plays more from a withdrawn or wide position. This, I believe, is what Milan need more.
The logic is that Leonardo, to cater for the Gaucho, seems set on playing a 4-3-3 system with the number 80 on the left side of the attacking trident. That leaves a central and a wide right role to be filled in.
Milan have plenty of options for the central role. Marco Borriello is one, the ever green Super Pippo and Brazilian whiz kid Pato the other two. All of these strikers are not suited to playing on the right but rather down the middle so in conclusion we already have three options for this one role.
As for the right attacking role there are no natural choices currently in Milan’s ranks and for this reason I believe Milan should look to sign one.
There are a number of options for Milan which are realistic. The first one that springs to mind is that of Real misfit Arjen Robben. A super talent however somewhat injury plagued. With Milan’s renowned MilanLab however, Robben just might get more playing time especially in a league that is less physically demanding than the English and Spanish leagues.
If Robben can stay fit then he would fit perfectly into the attacking right role. Cutting in from the right on his favoured left, Robben would be a lethal attacking option for Milan. He is able to score goals and wonderful goals at that, as well as provide assists.
With Real Madrid looking to offload a number of players to balance the books following the high profile signings of Ronaldo and Kaka, financially this seems a realistic option for Milan.
Another great option would be Ryan Babel of Liverpool. Young, fast, strong and able to score and create goals, Babel would excel in this role and perhaps is even a better option than Robben. The Dutchman would not come cheap I suspect, however Milan could offer him much more playing time than he receives at Merseyside and this could help the transfer along. Highly unlikely is this transfer but this is football and stranger things have happened.
Mancini of Inter is also an option for this role and has already been linked with a move to Milan. However, I for one would not be in favour of this move. The Brazilian is old and well past his prime and Milan can do better.
It only seems logical that with Leonardo adopting this new 4-3-3 system, Milan will need a natural attacker for the wide right role. Pippo Inzaghi is a more than able cover for Pato who would be first choice and lets not forget Borriello.
What are your thoughts? Should Milan opt for an wide attacking player or still go for an out and out striker?
