Bayern 4 Milan 1: Crisis?

Milan are out of the Audi Cup after being convincingly beaten by European rivals Bayern Munich at the Allianz arena. Patrick Muller struck twice for the Germans, the young Senegalese Sene scored the third and German Schweinsteiger weighed in with one also.

The German team dominated proceedings from the start however were still holding on to a one nil lead with 11 minutes still to play. Then Schweinsteiger struck with a wonderful solo effort only for Pirlo to whip in a free kick and reduce Bayern’s lead to one goal again.

However, Bayern’s domination was rewarded when young Sene tapped into an open goal on 89 minutes before Muller rounded things off with another tap-in on 90 minutes.

Milan started with a 4-4-2 formation with Storari in goal, Nesta and Thiago in centre defence and Zambrotta and Favalli in the full back positions. In centre of midfield, Pirlo started alongside Flamini with Abate on the right and Jankulovski on the left. Up front and it was the Brazilian pairing of Ronaldinho and Pato.

In the game’s opening exchanges Pato had a chance following a mistake from Bayern keeper Butt. The Brazilian directed his header in on a open goal only for his header to go wide.

Besides this half chance for Milan it was the Germans who were creating all the opportunities with their new signing Mario Gomez looking particularly impressive.

And it was the Germans who took the lead on 12 minutes through their young striker Patrick Muller. Ronaldinho lost the ball on the halfway line and three passes later, Muller slotted in at the near post.

Milan were not in the game at all in the first half.

Ronaldinho, at fault for losing the ball that led to the first goal, was nowhere to be seen.

With the hapless Jankulovski and Favalli Bayern were finding plenty of space down their right side with many of their attacks coming from this side of the field.

Milan were shaky and uncertain and played with no conviction in the opening half hour let alone the rest of the match. It was not until the 38th minute that Milan actually worked the space to get a shot on goal. Unfortunately, Abate’s shot went wide.

Of all people it was Favalli who found the net for Milan only for the goal to be ruled offside and rightly so.

The first half ended but it could not come soon enough for Milan.

Not only was Ronaldinho completely ineffective but rather worringly Pato is struggling to perform.

At half time, Leonardo replaced the ineffective Ronaldinho for Marco Borriello and Gattuso came on for the woeful Jankulovski.

Things did not change however as Milan were still unable to get into the game. Flamini moved to the left to help ensure that Bayern would not get the free reign they had down Milan’s left flank as they did in the first half.

Borriello struggled showing once again that he is out of his depth as the target striker for Milan.

Leonardo then made a handful of changes with Oneywu, Antonini, Kaladze and Di Gennaro all coming on for Favalli, Nesta, Abate, Zambrotta and Thiago.

None of these substitutes were able to impose themselves on the game as Milan continued to labor through the game.

Pirlo did give Milan hope still, bringing the deficit back to one goal, however it was Bayern who ran out deserving winners scoring two late goals in quick succession.

The loss means Milan will play Boca Juniors in tomorrow’s third place playoff. On the back of such a dismal performance in no way can Milan be expected to win this game.

Apart from the win against lowly Varese Milan have been unable to record a single victory this preseason. Drawing two-all against the Galaxy, Milan went on to lose all three matches of the World Football Challenge against Club America, Chelsea and city rivals Inter.

Following this humiliating loss to the Bavarians Milan are almost certainly nearing crisis point if not already.
