‘The Comedy of Milan’ continues……

What a laugh!

What a laugh!

Absolutely astonished was I when I heard about the comments made by our Milan supremo Silvio Berlusconi. I have serious doubts about this man not just as President of our club but for his sanity as a person which surely has to be questioned now. Berlusconi’s comments are sure to make Milan the joke of football yet again as the ‘Comedy of Milan’ continues.

The Italian Prime Minister was quoted in a recent interview saying, “We were and still are the number one team in the world.”

He went on to say that “Milan are in a strong position at the moment, with a new coach and a good mix of players.”

Maybe once upon a time, not so long ago either, were Milan officially number one in the world.

But times have changed in Milan. The last few months has seen unprecendented change with the departure of our coach, captain and our best player. It seems inevitable the Andrea Pirlo will be added to this list of departures as Milan enter into a new era.

At the moment Milan are really struggling. The preseason has been a disaster both on and off the pitch.

Milan failed to impress in the World Football Challenge and upon return to Europe were completely demolished by European rivals Bayern Munich. What is easily evidenced from performances so far is that Milan are in dire need of quality young players.

Off the field and it has been no better. Galliani has not managed to land one player apart from the free signing of Oguchi Oneywu. Milan’s transfer campaign so far has been, like the on-field performances, disastrous and embarassing.

Last season Milan only secured third spot on the table in the final rounds of the season. In addition, Milan failed miserably in their attempt for European glory in the lowly and now outdated UEFA Cup, knocked out by Werder Bremen in the early knock out stages. It is hard to argue that this was a successful season by any stretch of the imagination.

With the loss of Kaka and Maldini Milan have lost their two most influential players. Maldini, club captain and Milan player for all of 24 years is a loss that Milan will take sometime getting used to, such was the influence of this truly legendary player.

In Kaka, Milan have lost the player who at times single-handedly kept Milan together. We can credit the Brazilian for our redeeming success in Istanbul. If our preseason is anything to go by, without Kaka Milan simply are not the force they were with him. Ronaldinho, apart from showing glimpses of his phenomenal best, has yet to show that he really is going to take up the mantle that Kaka left behind.

In such difficult times, Milan have appointed the young and inexperienced Leonardo as manager. It is hard to predict just how Leonardo will fair given his complete lack of experience. What is certain though is that times are extremely difficult in the red and black half of Milan. The club is entering a new era, this is for sure, and Leonardo is the man being charged with the responsibility to reign in this new era which hopefullly will be full of success. With all this, forgive me if I am somewhat skeptical about his capacity to turn things around. I am, however, full of hope for him.

With all things considered, Silvio’s recent comments are astonishing to say the least. This guy must be completely detached from reality. I assume that his detachment from reality must have something to do with his somewhat questionable lifestyle, a lifestyle that resembles that of an adolescent and not one of a mature adult with a job that entails great social responsibility.

The ‘Comedy of Milan’ continues, and unfortunately so.
