News wrap + the question of foreign ownership

Borriello has struggled

Borriello has struggled

Good news. Milan are considering offloading Borriello in the January transfer window in order to raise funds to try and get Luis Fabiano, again.

It is terrific how the board are apparently keen to sell Borriello. In my view he is completely out of his depth playing for Milan and with him the team would continue to struggle especially against classy opposition (ie. v Inter). So selling Marco to raise funds is a good idea.

In regard to using that money to buy Luis Fabiano I am not so convinced considering that we now have Huntelaar. Would it not be best to use that money to invest in a player that may solve another problem, like that of our left full back position?

Indeed if Huntelaar can show his worth by January than it does not seem sensible to buy Luis Fabiano given our problems elsewhere in the side. Dare I say Huntelaar fails to impress by January then a move for Luis Fabiano does seem sensible but I think we should give Huntelaar a chance first and the benefit of the doubt.

A step in the right direction nonetheless by Milan. In addition to selling Borriello they are apparently keen to bring back Paloschi in what would be another good move. Paloschi is highly talented and young, just the type of player Milan need more of.

In more good news it is rumoured that Beckham will be back in January. I am a big fan of Becks. He is a model professional who always seems to prove his doubters wrong. Given his determination to go to South Africa next year, I believe Beckham will by highly motivated by the time he touches down in Milan again. Age aside, with this class and professionalism Milan can only benefit.

It has been mentioned by various sources that Kaladze may be the solution for our problem left back position, or at least an option. Not that I was completely against the idea, indeed I thought it might be worth a try. However following the Georgian’s own goal brace against the Azzurri and I am less convinced. Sorry Kaladze but really bad timing on this one.

In other news Massimo Oddo has come out and said that he still has something to give this Milan side……….mmmm. That I am not too sure about and if that was the case then he should not have had to come out and say it. If he really had something to offer Milan, than perhaps he should have communicated that through his preseason form. Unfortunately for Oddo, the message he sent out in preseason was not in line with what he claims. Leonardo made it abundantly clear that Oddo should leave however, and selfishly, Oddo has rejected numerous offers from other clubs to leave. This is understandable. Milan is a glamorous club, unlike Stoke (one of the clubs that made an offer for him), and I have a feeling that Milan pay well too.
Oddo is definitely not trying to endear himself to the Milan faithful. If he really does want to ‘lend a hand’ to this team then the best way to do that would be for him to leave so that Milan can get whatever sum of euros he attracts.

The issue of foreign ownership has once again surfaced. Calcio supremo Giancarlo Abete does not like the idea of foreign ownership in Serie A and he has come out again to reiterate his stance. This is an issue I am very interested in especially following the rise of the Premier League that has resulted largely as a result of foreign ownership. Though I do not complelely favour foreign ownership, I do believe that if Italian football wants to quickly regain its position as the best league in the world, it is definitely an avenue worth considering.

But, I am not totally convinced on the idea. There are question marks over the integrity of the notable figures that have invested their vast fortunes in Premier League clubs in recent years. I believe that if the money being invested in England is not legitimate, as some commentators will have you believe, then the system is doomed to come undone at some point.

Also, whether English fans like to admit it or not, it is undoubtedly true that English football has lost much of its ‘authenticity’ so to speak. I am of the belief that the Premier League is really not an ‘English’ league for the English any longer. It is an international league in more ways than one. Foreign players now equal English players in the Premier League. All the coaches of the big four are foreign with a few others at other clubs. Now, even the majority of the owners are foreign especially at the bigger clubs.

I do not believe this is a desirable outcome. I am proud of the fact that Italian football is still ‘Italian’. However, if Calcio is not going to open its arms to foreign ownership then I do hope that changes are made elsewhere in order for the Serie A to reclaim its place as the best league in the world.

Let us know your views on foreign ownership and whether you believe it is the way forward for Calcio or
not.

  1. In the global market era, Calcio, as any other industry, should keep the doors open to foreign investors, possibly genuines (but how to know?)

We need Fabiano, even if Huntelaar will fare well.

But mostly we need to reinforce the middle field. The best way I see is to move to a 3×4x2×1. What do u think?

  2. I agree. The benefits that foreign ownership can provide are significant. Therefore it has to be considered. As far as making sure that only genuine investors are permitted, well that is another issue altogether but there must be ways that can mitigate this problem (ie. regulation).

On current form you cannot say no to Luis Fabiano. For Brazil in particular he has been sensational. But, Milan need to reinforce other areas first, like the midfield or defence.

A 3-4-2-1 system to be honest I am not to sure about. I fear that the players may be a little too unfamiliar with such a system. However, unless we sign two good full backs in January then perhaps it is an option.

I tend to think that a basic 4-4-2 system is the way to go. It is a more pragmatic approach to the game but I just feel that players may be more used to this system and therefore it may work better.
