Milan still carry the Italian flag in UCL

There is no doubt that Italian teams in recent times have really struggled in Europe. That is, with the exception of Milan. Despite all the troubles with the side, despite the significant strengthening of both Inter and Juventus over the European summer, it was Milan who once again carried the flag for Italian football in Europe.

Minus Diego, Juventus were unable to account for Ligue 1 champions Bordeaux at home and had to settle for a draw. Fiorentina, who had Gilardino sent off before half time, lost out to Lyon by a goal to nil but it could have been much worse for the Viola. Whilst the ‘mighty’ Inter were completely outplayed at home by reigning Champions Barcelona and can consider themselves lucky in earning a share of the spoils.

Milan, however, once again showed how they are simply made for the Champions League. When one considers their form in Serie A this season compared to the their performance at the Stade Velodrome, it is undeniably true that Milan really are a different team in the UCL.

Heading into the encounter against Marseille the Rossoneri were low on confidence following some dismal form in Serie A. History also was not in their favour as the side under Ancelotti had only managed to claim three draws and two losses when playing in France. It was also the UCL debut for our inexperienced coach Leonardo.

Yet despite everything Milan, as usual in the UCL, were able to lift their game on what was yet another memorable night in Europe.

I am still not fully confident that this team can go all the way. I just do not believe that we have the depth in quality to still be in contention late on in the season. But I have hope. And when it comes to the UCL, Milan seemingly always have a chance at least especially with SuperPippo still showing how it is done.

With Milan the only Italian side claiming victory in matchday 1, it is the Rossoneri who still carry the flag for Milan in the Champions League. Forza Milan!
