Milan v Roma Preview: A must win game

Che fai?

Che fai?

The same fixture last season saw Maldini and Kaka play their last home game for the Rossoneri. David Beckham was also part of the team that day. Even with such notables Milan still lost to a Roma side with little to play for. Milan must do alot better in this season’s fixture with only a win the acceptable outcome. Languishing in 12th position, Milan simply cannot afford to lose any more ground on the top four.

Let us hope that Leo took full advantage of the international break to work on Milan’s attacking play. Scoring goals has been Milan’s major weakness this season having only scored one goal in their last four outings. Clearly the system with a trequartista is not working and Leo is expected to continue with the 4-4-2 formation despite its limited success against Atalanta.

It is a concern where Milan find themselves considering that their Serie A fixtures so far, apart from Inter, have been against rather modest opponents. The team will have to do it the hardway and achieve some positive results against Roma this sunday and the likes of Napoli and Lazio over the next couple of weeks.

This match against Roma will be a good measure of Leo’s capacity to bring this team back from the brink following his chance because of the international break to resolve some underlying issues in the side. Should Leo’s Milan falter again and I believe that his position may just become untenable.

It is not only important for Milan to achieve a positive result against Roma so that they can start climbing up the ladder again but also to gain some much needed confidence heading in to their titanic task of facing Real Madrid in Madrid a few days later.

Team news

Marco Borriello is available again following his recovery from injury whilst Thiago Silva is also back from injury and is expected to start alongside Nesta.

Expected lineup

Storari; Abate, Nesta, Thiago, Zambrotta; Ronaldinho, Pirlo, Ambrosini, Seedorf; Pato, Huntelaar

acmilanblog.net prediction:

Things could get worse for Milan, there is no doubting that. That is untill January when hopefully reinforcements will arrive. For now the team has to keep within distance of the top four and stay in the Champions League. The side can do it, whether under the guidance of Leo is another question. But expect Milan to force the issue with Roma. A loss is likely given Roma’s great record against Milan especially at the San Siro. However, Roma are not having the greatest of seasons also so a draw may be likely.
