Milan v Sampdoria Preview: Will he or wont he?

Borriello or Huntelaar?

Borriello or Huntelaar?

The will he or wont he headline refers to the decision of whether Leo will leave out Borriello and play Huntelaar instead. It does, however, seem unlikely but I remain hopeful. KJH needs to be given a chance especially before the January transfer window and there is no better time than now, off the back of his sensational late double against Catania.

Another reason why Leo should ‘rest’ Borriello and play KJH is because since Borriello is our first choice striker at the moment it would be wise to rest him for that oh so very important clash three days later in Zurich. With such a situation, Leo could justify himself in making the change and even the hardcore Borriello fans could be swayed by such an argument.

Looking at the encounter against the Dorians, it is another crucial game for Milan. It seems that every game is crucial and for teams chasing the big prize, every game is. With Sampdoria just four points behind in fourth place, this really is an important match especially since there is only three points separating fourth and tenth place.

Doria have fallen off the pace a little in recent weeks and were comprehensively beaten last week in the Genoa derby. We need to capitalise on their drop in form and our sky high confidence and win to further consolidate our position and give Inter a reason to look over their shoulder.

Our run of late has been fantastic and has surprised many, both fans and neutrals alike. Whether the good times roll on is questionable given that we are not yet a complete side. But, with all our current issues and previous dramas of pre and early season, we have done exceptionally well. Though many of our wins have arguably required a slice of good fortune, we still have exhibited a stylish attacking approach of play that will only get better as the side becomes more familiar with the new system. As the season progresses, our weaknesses will likely be exposed but for now at least let us enjoy the good times.

Read, All hail Leo

Against Doria, we are rightly the favourites. Whilst our home form has not been spectacular, at home against Cassano and co we should win. One reservation I do have is that the side will have one eye on the midweek encounter against the Swiss. For this, the players will be careful not to get injured and in doing so Doria may just take advantage of any lack of aggression. The Blucerchiati will be very eager to make up for last weeks’ derby loss and turn around their form which has been falling of late. For this reason it will be a very competitive encounter and Leo must achieve in focussing his players on the task at hand and leave the Zurich match for Zurich.

In other matters it has been mooted in the press that Adriano of Sevilla, the Brazilian left back, is being lined up by Milan for a January swoop. Brazilians and Milan go well together and since we so urgently need a quality full back this is a move I am all for. Adiyiah, Adriano and Hernanes would make for a very happy January.

Gattuso has been convinced by Galliani to stay at Milan despite his lack of playing time. For Gattuso it is a good move. The EPL is beyond him now and he could only realistically fair better if he were to play for another side in Italy but that will not happen. Gattuso is Milan for life or so it seems and as a fellow Calabrese this is a decision that I am content with. His fighting spirit will be of good use to the side, whether on the pitch or off, and of course his experience is priceless. We perhaps have much to gain from Rino still.

Before I sign off, a word of sympathy and ‘get better’ wishes for our once and still beloved Ukranian star Shevchenko who was involved in a car accident not a day ago. It has been a tough few years for Sheva and as a die-hard Milan fan, it has also been hard to watch him struggle through them. But Sheva will always be a legend to us Milanisti. Get better Sheva.
