AC Milan Transfers

Transfer Talk: Part 2

In judging what players should leave the club very much depends on the players that arrive. With only Beckham (who arrives only on loan) and Adiyiah being added to the squad so far, it is hard to see any of our current players being forced out as a result.

As has been the case for a number of years now, we seem likely to continue on with some players whose time really has passed. But of these players there are a few that, despite who arrives whether it be this January on in the summer, really need to be let go.

Starting from the back, Kakha Kaladze, Papa Favalli and Massimo Oddo are three players that need to leave. Kaladze is an absolute liability at the back whilst Favalli at forty is also another liability as he simply does not have the legs any more to keep pace. As for Massimo Oddo, the fact that he is playing in the Serie A still is a mystery. He has been so mediocre in his time at Milan that it is simply amazing that he is still playing for us. He should have left last summer but he stubbornly refused and one suspects that it was for money that he wanted to stay.

Whether Milan get any money from the sale of Kaladze or Oddo is a non-issue. We need to just release them for they are have only cost our side in the last few seasons rather than add anything of value to it.

Midfield may be our problem area at the moment but in defence we seriously lack depth. We need to get rid of these three has-beens or never-has-beens and inject some youth, ambition and talent.

Moving on to midfield and is seems likely that Gattuso will leave the club at some point. Leo has completely outcasted Gattuso who has barely featured this campaign. With Flamini and Ambrosini ahead of him in the pecking order, there seems little future that Rino will stay around much longer.

Galliani may have convinced Rino to stay on, but if Leo fails to give him playing time it will not be long before Rino makes his distress known again. Unless things change, Rino will leave but most likely in the summer.

Up front and there has been much speculation surrounding the possible departure of Huntelaar. In a previous post I outline why Huntelaar must stay. One reason why he must stay is that he is simply better than Borriello. How Borriello continues to occupy the starting birth in the team is baffling. Sure he has scored some goals and provided some assists, however, I do not believe that 4 goals in 9 matches, in which two he scored in one game, is all that great.

The fact that Huntelaar has been linked to Arsenal and Manchester United, two sides coached by two of the best managers of the modern era, proves that he still is regarded as a fine talent. His goalscoring exploits in the Eredivisie match those of a previous great, Marco Van Basten, whilst his quality is undeniable. As for Borriello, he needs five shots on goal before he scores. He simply does not possess the quality that a club like Milan should demand.

Huntelaar needs to stay but if he is forced to leave, than only with the guarantee that another quality striker will arrive immediately to take his place will it be acceptable. At the time of writing this post, it was reported that Milan were offering 25 million euro and Huntelaar to Wolfsburg for Bosnian striker, Edin Dzeko. Such a transfer I would support, however, I do not reservations over whether Dzeko is worth that much.

  1. Hi Franky
I agree with you about the defence and the players that need to go.

I didn’t see it but apparently De Vito did really well at left back in the Coppa Italia and Antonini & Abate are also coming on leaps and bounds in the full back positions. It seems Leonardo is much more willing put faith in the younger players than Ancelotti ever was which bodes well for the future.

I have to say that I strongly disagree with your views on Borriello. 4 in 9 is not a bad tally for someone who has only just got back to playing regular football this season. If he keeps up an almost 1 in 2 scoring record then he will be among the leagues top scorers at the end of the season. You also seem to overlook his work rate and how good he is at holding up the ball.

For the one target man position we have I see the position as fully stocked. Borriello, Hunterlaar and Inzaghi all have different qualities but are all reliable goal scorers. I’m excited to see what Addiyah can do as a wide forward. If he can integrate into the 1st team he could give us an extra bit of quality in the squad and help push for unexpected silverware this season!

keep up the good work with the blog!
