The match in Turin that takes place tonight will shed much light on just who is capable of challenging Inter for the title. Following our magnificent victory against Genoa, I am confident of a win. I also believe that it is us and not Juve that can challenge Inter for the title. Juve are in all sorts at the moment much to our advantage and it will be a huge disappointment if we can not take advantage of this and win. For the good of Italian football and so Inter do not get any further away from the chasing pack, a win is a must.
Despite our little dip in form at the end of December, we Milan fans have enjoyed a long successful period as we have only had to witness one loss from our side since September. In the meantime, we have also enjoyed seeing some beautiful football this season. So far Leo has done an excellent job especially with the resources he has had available.
What has most impressed me with Leo has been his ability to lift the performance of many of our players, such as Ambrosini, Antonini and Borriello. Ambrosini has arguably been our most important player all year whilst Antonini has put in some very solid performances at left full back. Borriello has been slowly improving all season and is now frequently finding the net.
It will be interesting to see what team Leo fields against Juve. With reports indicating that Seedorf, Pato and Zambrotta will not play, then it is likely that Leo will field the same team as he did against Genoa. And I hope he does.
What the match against Genoa showed the other day is that with a more balanced midfield, consisting of a defensive Rino, an offensive Pirlo and a box to box midfielder in Ambrosini, we can dominate midfield. And when a team dominates midfield, they will control the majority of possession and will create more chances. This is exactly what happened against Genoa. Against Zurich and Palermo in December, we suffered greatly in midfield for we had Pirlo playing too deep alongside Ambrosini and Seedorf. With such a midfield, we lacked defensive grit and as a result we struggled to win the ball.
If Leo fields the same team and we get another positive result, than he may have just stumbled upon a better starting eleven and there will be pressure on him to alter things for good. Such a change however would come at a cost as Seedorf, would have to be sacrificed.
But I am all for this change, and if we get a win against Juve, then such change to the team should occur. It also just makes more sense. With a three man midfielder, there should be one box to box player, like Ambrosini, one defensive midfielder, like Rino or Flamini, and one offensive midfielder, like Pirlo or Seedorf.
Up front meanwhile, I am keen on the new dynamic that Beckham provides. Like Ronaldinho on the left playing as purely a play maker, with Beckham on the right we have effectively the same thing. With Pato out again, expect Beckham to start in that same role again.
With the good form of players like Antonini, Abate and Borriello along with the arrival of Beckham, we suddenly have more options and a more competitive team all round.
With things going so well at the moment, and with all the troubles at Juve, we should and must win tonight.
Forza Milan
