Milan 1 Napoli 1: As we were

Despite only drawing, all is not lost for Milan. Only one point is still the difference and with nine matches still to play, there is more than enough time for Milan to catch Inter.

Though in theory there may be sufficient time for Milan to catch Inter, the real concern surrounding Milan is whether their depleted squad has the capacity to finish the season strongly and bring home the Scudetto.

The performance of the Rossoneri against Napoli did not provide with certainty any evidence that this Milan side really can overtake Inter and win the Championship.

Indeed, after their first half performance, Milan could consider themselves lucky to be still on par with Napoli at the break. For despite holding much of the possession, it was Napoli that looked dangerous especially on the counter.

Milan’s defense looked vulnerable to Napoli’s pacey attacking trident of Lavezzi, Hamsik and Quagliarella. It therefore came as no surprise that Napoli’s opening goal came about when Favalli was left for dead by Lavezzi who raced onto a wonderful through by Pazienza.

With Massimo Oddo bowling over his own keeper, Campagnaro had the easy task of slotting the ball home into an empty net.

It was comical defending by Milan, however, such defending came as no surprise given the presence of Favalli and Oddo in defence. Milan were simply lucky not to have conceded more than one goal in the first half.

Despite being outplayed in the first half, like all great club sides, Milan still were able to draw level in the first half.

Ronaldinho sent in a dangerous whipping cross and Inzaghi was placed perfectly to nod the ball home.

The second half was much better by Milan as their performance started to look more like a team actually playing for the Scudetto.

However, despite dominating possession, Milan failed to convert their possession into goals. On the basis of the second half displays by both sides, a draw in the end was probably fair.

There were some encouraging performances by a few Milan players.

The most encouraging was that of Inzaghi who again showed he still possesses the predatory prowess to make an impact. Inzaghi’s positioning was perfect and with Ronaldinho also in form, the two struck up a formidable parntership.

On the basis of his performance, Leo would do well to consider Inzaghi as the new number one even when Borriello returns from his sickness.

For not only did Inzaghi get into good positions, creating options for Ronaldinho and co in the process, but what stood out most about his performance was his relentless hassling and tireless work-rate which saw him drop back to even defend at times.

Inzaghi played with real heart and really put in a top effort and in light of this showing, both Borriello and Huntelaar have been put to shame.

For both Borriello and Huntelaar are extremely lazy players and compared to Inzaghi, they must play with no heart at all. Borriello, to be fair, has put in some gritty displays, but he has done so only in patches. In recent weeks, Borriello has become just as lazy as Huntelaar and both these players should be embarassed that a 35 year old legend of the game, did more running, more defending and more hassling than Borriello and Huntelaar did combined against United, for instance.

Elsewhere on the park for Milan, it was encouraging to see Thiago Silva play well despite the absence of Nesta. The young Brazilian was tidy at the back and made some influential forward runs.

In midfield, Flamini put in a tireless display, doing his job sufficiently enough to allow Pirlo to dictate the game. Flamini may be a little rash in the tackle at times, however, like Inzaghi, he plays with heart and for us fans, this is great to see.

The concerns for Milan were the under par displays of Favalli and Oddo. Oddo needs to be relegated to the bench rather sooner than later. With Antonini back from injury along with Zambrotta, presumably this is what Leo will now do.

As for Favalli, he is just an accident waiting to happen, though I hope he proves me wrong.

The main concern for Milan was the injury to Pato after not even 15 minutes. One suspects that Pato may have been rushed back from injury but what ever is the reason for his injury, for Milan one hopes that he will be back in a week’s time.

Pato’s replacement, Mancini, made only his second appearance of the club and failed to impress. Indeed, Mancini had the best chance of the second half to win the game for Milan, but was unable to beat De Sanctis one on one.

Overall, it was not the most encouraging display from Milan but nor was it cause for anymore concern.

Was it the performance worthy of a team pushing for the title? The answer to this question is, not really.

For now, it is as we were, as one point remains the difference. With Inter still partaking in the Champions League, there most likely will be another chance for Milan to gain ground on Inter, however, Leo’s side will have to improve on this display if indeed they are to be Italian champions.

Yea such a golden opportunity wasted. I personally blame Oddo for this. I dont get his logic in running straight at Abbiati. It was just ridiculous. I dont understand why we even got him back after Bayern. He should never touch the field after this. Favalli on the other hand is solid in positioning but is freakin 38. Any change of pace and he is done for. It is the same problem with Zambrotta too. In a game that Milan dominate, these players do well enough. But when its a tough game these players mess up bad. Man Bonera seems like a monster in defense compared to the options we have. What has this team come down to? But enough of rant. With Pato out for nearly rest of the season, all we can do is hope for the best. At least Pippo looks fabulous. Hopefully he and Dinho will save the season for us.

Oddo was a disaster. Thankfully Antonini is now back so we won’t have to see too much more of Oddo. I think this was probably Favallis best game of the season. Napoli have quality attackers who will always create chances but for the most part they were contained. The goal we conceded was a mess but other than that this makeshift defense was much better than I thought it would be.
There were some very solid performers on the pitch. Flamini was tireless and looks more and more like a part of the starting 11. Pirlo was great as captain and worked really hard to win back the ball to get moves started. A final word for the brilliant Inzaghi, he hustled and hustled and was a constant thorn in Napoli’s side plus he got a goal. I think Borriello might be feeling fatigued as he hasn’t played a whole season for so many years and his workrate had dropped in recent games. Inzaghi has surely given Leo something to think about.

Looking at the calendar, chances are:
    Roma 50%
    Inter 40%
    Milan 10%
How to be more optimistic if, with all respect, we rely in Inzaghi for the Scudetto..

Your stats look close to the mark Aurelio. We do not have an easy run in and now with Pato out along with Nesta, surely we are going to be found out soon.

Favalli did have one of his better games, but he was still left for dead by Lavezzi for the first goal.

As for Oddo, I agree with Milanista. He should never step on the field again. I would rather see a primavera come to play for him.

Though it is kind incredible that we will have to rely on Inzaghi to bring home the Scudetto, I was very impressed with his performance.

His effort and tenacity was an example to the whole side just how a player should play when wearing the red and black.

I hope Leo choose Pippo over Borriello who has been terrible of late.
