AC Milan Match Reviews

Parma 1 Milan 0: Not good enough

Just when Milan had the chance to really push their case to be Champions, the team has failed to perform. Against Napoli on the weekend, when top spot was the prize, the Rossoneri fell short. Then again on Wednesday night, when Milan had another chance to push their case for the title, they disappointed yet again.

On the basis of these last two poor displays by the Rossoneri, if anything is to be discerned it is this, this Milan side are simply not good enough.

There are a number of reasons why this Milan side will probably not win the title. Firstly, this team has shown in the last five days that they are just not hungry enough. Against Napoli, in a game that presented them with the chance of claiming top spot in the league for the first time since September 2008, it was Napoli that came out with guns blazing instead of the Rossoneri.

Then again at the Ennio Tardini stadium, again in a game where Milan had a chance to prove their title credentials, it was the opposition again that came out firing. In fact, Milan were lucky not to go behind with in seconds of the kick off when Crespo’s volley rebounded off the cross bar.

The reason why this Milan teams lacks hunger is likely due to the fact that most of Milan’s players have already won everything.

This has to be the reason because for all the experience in this Milan side, one would think that in the important games, it actually would count for something.

But for this Milan side, it does not count much at all. Therefore, one is drawn to the only conclusion that the players are simply not hungry enough.

Of course, this is not the only reason why this Milan side will probably not win the title. Another major reason is because the players are simply not good enough.

The youngers players of the squad, like Borriello, Huntelaar and Abate are simply not good enough whilst the older players, like Pirlo, Gattuso and the list goes on, are far beyond their best. Some of them are shadows of the players they once were, like Gattuso for instance.

The current squad is in dire need of youth and quality. These are the two essentials that Milan do not have at the moment.

With the latest transfer reports emanating from Italy, it does seem that things are not changing with the news that Mario Yepes has sealed a deal with the Rossoneri.

That is right, a 34-year old defender who has never lit the world on fire let alone even being a seasoned International has apparently been signed by the club. Mystifying and baffling as to why Milan have signed this player.

Looking more closely at the match against Parma, it is now beyond doubt that Borriello’s brief run of good form not so long ago was a flash in the pan.

Against Parma, Borriello was nowhere to be seen. Not only was he completely immobile, but his workrate was poor and quite frankly he seems to not want to go to the World Cup. Inzaghi should have started instead, for against Napoli, Pippo was superb.

Pippo’s workrate and hunger was impressive, but it was his movement was the most impressive aspect of his game. His movement gave options to Milan’s creative players and with this chances were created.

Against Lazio on the weekend, Borriello has to be dropped and Inzaghi should take his place in the starting lineup.

Elsewhere on the pitch, only Abbiati deserves to be criticised like Borriello. For at the end of the day, it was his mistake that lead to Parma scoring the winner and that goal for Milan was a major blow. Abbiati simply has to take responsibility for his mistake.

The rest of the Milan side performed amicably if not great. Even Favalli did himself proud despite an early mistake against Crespo.

Looking ahead, one cannot help but think this Milan side are just not going to get there. Inter are a far stronger side that have hit good form at a crucial time and even though they are competing on two fronts, they have the depth to cope.

As for Milan, not winning the title may be a blessing in disguise. Galliani and Silvio would surely justify continuing their catastrophic transfer policy in light of a Rossoneri Scudetto.

As always Franky, your report is spot on. Even though I am a long-term follower of the Rossineri this team is probably the worst I have seen representing it. Milan do have some wonderful individuals: Ronaldinho, Pirlo, Nesta, Seedorf but, with the exception of T. Silva, all are plodding into the sunsets of their careers, and there are no obvious replacements for them in the current squad.
Like you, even though I have never felt this way before, I think it would be disastrous if Milan were to win the scudetto this year as such an apparent success would embolden Berlusconi & Galliani to further run the club into the ground. The most significant games this season were our defeats to Inter and Man U which demonstrated the significant weaknesses of the squad when playing against class acts. I am afraid the only reason that Milan are challenging for the title is a reflection of the poor state of Serie A whose teams, with the current exception of Inter, have fallen dramatically in quality in comparison to other comparable European leagues in recent years. If Milan were playing in the English Premier league it would only be in mid-table side.
This collective Italian myopia is reflected in the national team which has failed, like Milan, to stimulate youth player development, even though the under-21 team performed so admirably recently. It appears Lippi, Galliani et al are determined to grind their proud inheritance into the dust of defeat and humiliation, very sad.
I would exclude Leonardo from major criticism as I consider he has performed admirably (although clearly out thought by Murinho and Ferguson) for a rookie coach with limited resources. However I believe the team, particularly its older and previously successful members are acutely aware of their current plight and the apparent inability of the owners to recognise the need for urgent investment and modernisation and this has affected their performances giving me the impression they are just happy to play out the remainder of their careers and pocket the fat salaries before retiring as they do not exhibit the necessary hunger for the game nor work well as a seamless team. I believe both domestically and internationally the once proud Italian heritage has been overtaken by a collective death wish where the only aim is to avoid acute embarrassment when competing with comparable teams from other countries.
