Why It Will Be Bad News If Ronaldinho Leaves Milan

Have we seen the last of Ronaldinho at Milan?

Quite simply, had it not been for the many talents of the wonderfully gifted Ronaldinho, last season would have been an outright disaster for the Rossoneri. The Brazilian was Milan’s main creative force going forward last season and a very effective one at that as the former world player of the year accumulated an impressive tally of 14 assists in Serie A, the highest of any player in the league.

It is no coincidence that Milan’s season, after a horrid start, only got better when Ronaldinho got better. For a time, many thought that the Brazilian was on his way back to his brilliant best. But, whilst at times he was brilliant, he never got quite to being at his best.

One suspects that Ronaldinho, if he really wanted to, could get back to his best or very close to it. It would just require more fitness training and of course much more motivation. But Ronaldinho, unfortunate as it is, simply does not have the motivation any more.

This was shown by his questionable level of fitness throughout last season. On the pitch, it has also been clearly visible by his painfully low work rate and commitment.

Ronaldinho’s lack of motivation may also prove to be a reason why he decides to leave Milan. A final stint at either Galaxy or Flamengo will suit the Brazilian. At both these clubs he will not have half the pressure he would if he were to stay at the San Siro. Whether it be for the Galaxy or Flamengo, just his presence will satisfy local fans. Unlike in Milan where fans will expect him to continue carrying the mantle for this much trouble Milan side.

But, for Milan, there is a great danger if the decision is made to let him go. The reason being that due to the severe lack of quality and depth in the current Milan squad, losing Ronaldinho would be a significant loss to a team already in a precarious state.

What is even more concerning is that not one attacking midfielder, a player that could replace Ronaldinho, has been linked with a move to the club. This is because of the simple fact that Galliani, for some completely unknown reason, is bent on bringing in another striker to Milan when this is the one department in the Milan squad that does not need reinforcements.

If Ronaldinho leaves, Milan will lose their main attacking threat. Milan’s other main attacking threat, Pato, without Ronaldinho, will be rendered less effective.

Letting Ronaldinho go is not what the main problem is here. For all his talents and his great contribution to the team last year, Ronaldinho does not have the motivation any longer to really benefit Milan in the long run. Letting him go now whilst the club can still get money for him is a good decision to make.

However, if Ronaldinho does leave then there is no other option but to bring in another attacking midfielder who can replace him. Unfortunately, it does not seem that the club thinks the same way and this is the real danger.

With Allegri expected to play a 4-3-1-2 system, that requires a traditional trequartista to play in behind the strikers and direct the attack, exactly who in the current Milan side could competently and consistently perform well in this role.

The answer is no one. Clarence Seedorf is, like many current Milan players, far beyond his best. The Dutchman cannot be expected to play such an important role for such a great club in the year that he will turn 35 years old.

Nor can Andrea Pirlo be sacrificed from his midfield role as that would leave only Massimo Ambrosini, Mathieu Flamini and Gennaro Gattuso to play in midfield. A scary thought indeed.

The only other option is Pato. The young Brazilian’s pace and ability to run at defenders and beat them would help take defenders out of the game and leave one of the two strikers in front of him free. His passing ability and creativity, however, would perhaps need some work. But, Pato is perhaps the best available option.

Within the current Milan squad, it is clear that there would be a real need for an attacking midfielder if Ronaldinho leaves. But, given how the transfer campaign has gone so far for Milan, there is little hope that such a player would be brought in.

galliani repeteadely said for a big man going a big one coming. Why not trust him until he will prove the contrary?
However, also for me dinho should stay.
On the back we are ok with the greek and yepes (i am sure he will surprise us). on the midfield we need the speed end energy of abate on the right wing. pato can play as as center-forward behind the striker (his natural role). gattuso and the 2 dutch out, fabiano and diaby or diarra (or similar player) in.
    That’s all for me.

I wouldn’t mind Ronaldinho leaving if it means we can reinvest in some quality young players, preferably midfielders. I agree that he was a big help last season but he only really hit form when deployed on the left side of the front three. At the beginning of the season Leonardo played 4-3-1-2 with ‘Dinho in the hole and he was completely useless. As I remember it, Leo dropped him because of his poor performances. Allegri might have the same problem if he uses that formation.

For some reason this summer has seen Milan sign another goalkeeper and two central defenders. I think both of those positions are quite well stocked now! Even with the retirement of Favalli (how will we cope?) we now have 7 central defenders. Compare that with the 6 recognised midfielders that are in the squad and the terrible transfer policy and lack of balance in the team comes into focus. Further to that, apart from Flamini & Abate (I’m counting Abate as a midfielder) the rest of the midfield is 30+.

We need a better midfield and we need it this season. Without it the defense will look unprotected and the forwards will look isolated.

I think with Pato, Borriello, Hunterlaar, Inzaghi & Adiyiah we have enough capable strikers who will score if they get chances. I am especially hopeful for Hunterlaar this season as he seems to play best when partnered with another striker. Also with the exception of Inzaghi our strikers are the most youthful part of the team which shows some promise.

The fullbacks are also an issue. If Allegri does play 4-3-1-2 then the fullbacks will be essential to privede the team with width. I was impressed with Antonini last season but Abate & Zambrotta are not Champions League quality while Jankulovski is dead wood.

Looking at who has arrived this season I can’t see which one of them is actually going to break in to the starting 11. Yepes & Papa will only be cover for Nesta & Silva and Abbiati will be the first choice keeper.

If sacrificing Ronaldinho means bringing in more players in needed positions then I am all for it. Although my preference is for the older dead wood to be sold off instead.

At the moment, I can’t see Milan signing Fabiano, Diaby or Diarra! I went to see Arsenal play last season and Diaby was an immense presence in the midfield. He would be a brilliant signing for us. Good at tackling and great distribution when on the ball.

I do like the looks of that team though, especially the front 3.

I am always impressed by your faith in Galliani and Berlusconi to make things right again.

Whilst my position on Berlusconi has softened, I still think Galliani has made an utter mess things in the last couple of years.

I have little hope that he can bring in a big name, especially after he has said that only a big player will come in once a big player leaves.

The thing is we do not need a big player. We need a number of young but talented players. No one player is going to solve our problems.

    Well said Tarik.

Indeed, we have too many central defenders and in the forward department we should be okay.

It is midfield that is a real concern. And if Allegri does impose his 4312 system, then a central attacking midfielder should become priority number 1 with priority number 2 being a DM.

I think Papa will be used at full back as well as back up for Thiago and Silva.

I agree. I do not think Fabiano will arrive now, nor will Diaby. Diarra has been linked with the club, though I remain doubtful.

Diaby or Diarra would be great signings, perhaps Diaby slightly better has he has more promise.

To Aurelio. I like that team too especially the presence of some youngsters on the bench.

Breaking news: Papa has been officially signed (Permanently, not on loan) with Rodney Strasser, Gianmarco Zigoni and Nnamdi Oduamadi going to Genoa on co-ownership deals.

I’m not sure about Oduamadi, but Zigoni and Strasser showed some promise. The worry is that they will get first team football at Genoa, perform well and then cost a bomb to get back. Just like Paloschi.

i doubt galliani takes a move without his boss approval…
However, i confirm my confidence in them. I support the austerity policy and I feel sure that, in spite of that, this year we will be very competitive.
    One question: where is braida?

Zamboratta, oddo, Ambirosini and Abbiatti renewed. Ronaldinho future in blank, 2011 season is very discouraging for milan fans. Did you hear Berlusconi’s press conference? ridiculous….

You/Milan fans insisted on youth in the squad but most of our young players are on loan to clubs like Genoa…. I simply cant watch our old players walking in the midfield.

His press conference was absurd. Much like his current political schemes.

In one way, he maybe can only really say what he said in an attempt to invigorate the players.

However, on the other side, much of what he said was, well, absurd.

It will be the hardest thing to see this year. Watching the likes of Oddo, Gattuso, Zambrotta and the rest hopelessly roll around the pitch.

The signs have not been encouraging recently.

my modest comments on your valuable ones.
    1. we are not ok in front. huntelaar must be replaced by a much better one.
    2. i didn’t know about the loans to genoa. however, they are just on loan and we kept the most promising ones. paloschi has serious limits (as zigoni..)
    3. oddo renewal is bad news. zambro was better to leave but he can stay on the bench. ambro will be our captain. I agree on the need of a strong attacking midfielder. gattuso must go and seedorf too (but, unfortunately, he will not…).
    4. i confirm, against all odds, my trust on berlusconi and galliani. I am ready to bet with you that a strong midfielder and a strong stricker will come and that we will have a sensational season !

I am suprised by your trust in berlusconi and galliani. They sold one of the best goal keeper of seriea for a very less money to juve. we need a right back, a midfielder of pirlo’s stature and ofcourse a strong centre forward (not a poacher), this is what last season taught us especially the two games with Man utd, at least they signed a greek defender. Thus we still need three roles to be filled, if berlusconi thinks that zambrotta, pirlo and ronaldinho are enough for this season then we are on downward spiral once again this season.

We hoped that Inter’s success will act as a motivation for milan but berlusconi’s press conference summarized everything, with a yesman coach we are doomed.

I cant belive that you still trust galliani and berlusconi.

    1)storari better than amelia?
    2)4 right backs non enough?
3)If huntelaar and gattuso agree to go galliani will keep up his promise…
4)or you’d prefer marotta who spent 50 mn in martinez pepe and bonucci?

storari was the best goal keeper last season. Oddo and Abate are not the right backs who can help milan.

I agree. Abate did not prove himself enough last year as a right back. Oddo, well, the less said the better.

I am not even sure if our new signing Sokratis is right for the position, after all he is predominantly a central defender.

We need one good full back to arrive still.

A shocking loss. Under no circumstances is it acceptable that Milan lose to such a side.

But, with a backline consisting of Janks, Kaladze, Bonera and Oddo, one thing was sure, we would always concede goals.

This is exactly what we need. It will be dismissed as the first friendly of the season but it should be looked at as a wake up call!
