Kevin Prince Boateng Signing is Not Enough

With the new season just around the corner, the signing of Kevin Prince Boateng on a year long loan deal from Genoa may well be the last acquisition Milan make. For a club of the stature of Milan, the fact that this signing may well be the most notable one made in a summer that has seen yet another veteran in Mario Yepes arrive along with the modest Marco Amelia and the tidy but unspectacular Sokratis, it is quite simply not good enough. In fact, it is nowhere near good enough.

It seems quite clear that for this upcoming season, Milan do not intend to challenge for top honours. Though Boateng’s presence in the Milan midfield will add some much needed youth and vitality, Boateng’s presence will not be enough to push Milan to greater heights than last season.

Why Milan even courted Boateng in the first place remains a mystery. It is not like his form last season for Portsmouth was so good as to put him in the reckoning for a move to a big club. Nor was his world cup form good enough to put him on the radar of Europe’s best clubs.

Yet, Milan found reason enough to pursue the young Ghanian and that they did.

But, even stranger than Milan’s pursuit of Boateng was how the deal for the player was concluded. For Boateng arrives in Milan not as a Milan player but as a Genoa player on loan from Genoa, the club who purchased him with the sole intent of loaning him to Milan.

Why Milan pursued this course of action is yet another mystery in the case of Kevin Prince Boateng.

It seems, at least from the outside, that Milan in making this deal are set to lose whilst Genoa can only gain. For if Boateng proves a success with Milan, than Milan will have to pay Genoa more than what Genoa originally paid for the player. In this scenario, Genoa can profit from the sale of a player that has never even donned their strip.

If Boateng does not prove a success with Milan, than Genoa can still gain by acquiring a player with one full season of experience in the Serie A. Milan, in turn, will have suffered from the lack of form of the player that was their biggest signing of the summer.

Time is running out for Milan to prepare a squad sufficiently competitive to be a contender for honours next season. Given how Milan’s transfer campaign has unfolded this summer, there seems little hope that much will change between now and the start of the new Serie A season.

Similar to last season, Milan fans must be more anxious than excited by what may eventuate this coming season.

You know Franky-T, I feel this article is just crtisizing Milan’s transfer plans & underestimating the qualities of KVP.

For one thing I know we cannot judge both until we see how the team fairs in the long season? UCL, Serie A, Coppa Italia??? Then we can judge. I hope you are not one of those ppl that just want big names (ready made players) to come to Milan immediately? It is a shame some milan fans think like that, Im not saying I would mind that but based on the economical aspect we have to take care of our budget & clear debts. And what is worng with working with a new set of players & making them stars, Like Kaka, Sheva, Pirlo.

I agree with Wess. I like KVP, time will say. WE’d have bought him if not for the limitations in the number of non-europeans…
Also Amelia is good for me.
BUT WE NEED TO REPLACE HUNTELAAR !!! IF THE MONEY FROM HIS SALE IS NOT ENOUGH TO BUY A BETTER STRICKER I WOULD SELL ALSO FLAMINI (WITH KVP, MERKEL, STRASSER AND THE SENIORS WE ARE FINE IN THE MIDFIELD..)

I think you have misunderstood what I have said.

I am all for Milan adopting a policy of utilising youth players with more experienced players in order to make the club financially more viable. If you read my previous article, http://acmilanblog.net/2010/07/15/milan-must-focus-on-youth-development/you will see exactly what I think.

The problem with signing Boateng is that at 23 he cannot be really regarded as young in a football world where a player is young if he is under 23 years old.

In addition, and more importantly, it is all very well to bring in younger players (even if they are 23) but only do so if they have previously shown a potential to become world class players. Boateng, in my opinion, is not such a player. He is a modest player.

Franky, your article “Milan must focus on youth development” was very good. I have red it previously & support you on that. Since you have stated that fact; we are both on the same line. However our friendly debate will be on KVP. I understand when you say that @ 23 he cannot be regarded as a youth, but we all know that in Serie A even 25 is considered youth. Team always look up to players at their prime / peak age (i.e. between 27 – 30 years of age). And consider this option, if KVP is good & suitable for Milan & we buy him next season from Genoa he will be an added bonus for us. Since by the time he is at his peak age, players like Pato, Merkel, Strasser, Verdi, Odumandi will have developed & matured more. That way we can mix a bit of youth with a bit of experience. KVP may not be world class I agree, but from what we all (who saw the World Cup) have seen, he has already shown the potential to become a future star. And most importantly we have our hands on a dynamic player which is what Milan needs @ the moment since we are in a re-building phase.

Ibra loan’s deal seems to be very close. What do you think ?

It does seem close and it has to be said, signing Ibra can only be a good thing.

Sure he fails to show up in big games , but most of the time he can still offer so much and his quality is undoubted.

Furthermore, he is a proven success in Italy and so he can only benefit Milan.

Understand what you feel,bro..its just not enough and it’ll take a magic to win the scudetto.(I’m hoping for something magical, thats a different story.)

Heard that we are trying for Ibra on a loan deal, that deffo would straighten things up and make the path to scudetto more clear and realistic..

With you Wess,I support the Boateng deal with all my heart.
He is a serious talent, but is inconsistent/headcase.If Milan can fix him up,it would be fantastic, which I’m hoping for.

BUT,like Franky said, not just Boateng can ensure our scudetto.Maybe Ibra can,or more generally,a WORLD-CLASS striker can.
(when I say worldclass,I just don’t mean the expensive players, but anyone who is better than Borriello/Hunter.)

I will be a loan. Milan will only pay his wages but not even the full amount apparently.

I feel that inter won’t be the same as last year(s); at least for 4 reasons :
    1) change of coach
    2) pillars becoming older (zanetti-cambiasso-lucio-samuel-etoo-milito)
    3) milito cannot repeat his incredible latest season
    4) lower motivation

    Am I just dreaming ?

I agree. Without Mourinho, Inter will not be the same side. Benitez is competent but has nothing on Jose.

Not sure about your point on Milito, only time will tell.

And yes the team is getting older and few replacements have come in apart from Coutinho who is perhaps still too young to make an impact.

Overall, I do not think they are the force they were last season but that should be expected. After last season’s exploits surely the only way now is down.

Juventus will be much stronger. Aquilani and Krasic are two great signings that Milan make Juve look more like her old self again.
