A.C. Milan: Preview Of 2010-11 Season

The season is just about to get underway and for yet another year running, for Milan it is the case of the same old, same old.

The arrivals of Mario Yepes, aged 34, and Sokratis Papastathopoulas and Kevin Prince Boateng who is being loaned from Genoa, have not been enough to rejuvenate a seriously ageing squad.

The likes of Gennaro Gattuso, Andrea Pirlo and Alessandro Nesta will again be relied upon to deliver for the Rossoneri, however, these players are only another year older and are not quite the players they once were. Gianluca Zambrotta and Massimo Ambrosini also fall into this category.

Ronaldinho, who is also not the player he once was, will again be relied upon to be the driving force behind Milan’s attack and much of Milan’s hopes will rest upon the performances of the former Barcelona star.

Despite everything, in Alexandre Pato and Thiago Silva Milan have perhaps two of the best young talents in Europe. If Thiago can build on his performances from last season and if Pato can keep relatively injury free, they both will help the Milan cause greatly this season.

In addition, this season new coach Massimiliano Allegri has promised to instil some of Milan’s young starlets which will help add some much needed hunger, speed and enthusiasm to his outfit.

Alexander Merkel is one such starlet that may prove to be a great addition to the first team whilst the likes of Andrea De Vito and Simone Verdi may also show their worth if given a chance.

As of now, talks are well underway to bring the former Inter hit man, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, to Milan. If the Swede does decide to move to Milan, he will greatly increase Milan’s prospects for the season. Though the midfield looks worryingly thin on quality and depth, with Zlatan’s arrival Milan will be able to boast perhaps one of the most feared strike forces in Europe with Ronaldinho and Pato playing alongside.

Much depends on whether or not the Swede will arrive. If the Milan squad stays as it is, then it will be another season where for Milan fans it will be the case of hoping the team avoids disaster rather than dreaming of silverware.

A note on Milan’s champions league prospects; the draw has again been very unkind to Milan. Again, the Rossoneri have been paired alongside Real Madrid who are now coached by Jose Mourinho. Milan fans do not need reminding of what Jose Mourinho’s Inter did against them last term.

In addition to Real, Milan will have to face off with Auxerre and former European heavyweights, Ajax. It is not an easy draw by any means and perhaps only Inter’s group is slightly more difficult.

Serie A Prediction: 4th
Champions League Prediction: Second Round
Key men: Alexandre Pato, Ronaldinho, Alessandro Nesta

    MY opinion on new signings:
    Yepes: useless
    Sokratis: promising
    Boateng: good
    Merkel (from primavera):my favourite

Ibra deal is almost sealed. He should be very motivated so the best we could expect…

As for the aging I am not worried as we have a good mix of mature (not old) and young players.

    My prediction.

    Serie A: first 33%
    second 66%

    CL: quarter finalist at least

We gonna have a great seson !

    I like your optimism.

Ibra deal is done, pretty much, and his arrival will help us a great deal.

I am not sure about challenging for the title, Inter are still very strong. However, watching them lose against Atletico and it has to be said that they were not impressive.

It should be an interesting season, lets hope we get off on the right foot tomorrow.

I don’t rate Benitez as a league winning manager, Inter will miss Mourinho as well so I’m sure it will be a more open season.

I’m not saying Milan will win the league but we have just signed Zlatan “has won the league the last seven seasons in a row” Ibrahimovic. It’s his medical on Monday, hopefully there is nothing wrong with his teeth!

I know it’s only Lecce and as I write this it’s only half time of the first game of the season but what a first half that was. I haven’t seen Milan play like this for years. A pure joy to watch. Everyone has played well but Pato, Ronaldinho and Pato have been on another planet.

I purposefully kept myself away from most of the Milan news this summer, as I feared the team would be worse off this year, and I just wanted to let the playing speak for itself. I just finished watching Milan demolish Lecce, and I was delighted. Not so much with the scoreline as Lecce is obviously on a different level, but with the enthusiasm and work rate of everyone. I don’t know what will come from the season, but I am glad I stepped back from the news, and my first thoughts of Milan this season was of utter delight.

Milan might rob me of my good feelings yet again, but for now its just faith that there will be lots of entertaining play to come.

There is optimism.. I never saw milan playing so good in years. The midfield was unusually fast. Ronaldinho and Pato were fantastic. Borilleo was simply waste, he is not a milan material. We should get rid of him before Huntelaar. Allegri has really suprised me, the first half was really amazing. We can safely say that milan has a change this season.

Hunterlaar seems all set to be going to Schalke and it looks like Borriello will be joining Juve on loan while Milan are working on bringing in Robinho from Man City.

I do worry that getting rid of both Hunterlaar and Borriello will leave us short of a strong target man if Ibra gets injured. We will be losing some of our strength in depth. I’m also not sure how Robinho will fit in to the current team as he will surely be used in the positions Ronnie and Pato currently occupy. He is a great back up to have for either of those, but I’m not sure that his ego can cope with being a bench warmer. Personally I wouldn’t swap Borriello for Robinho in the current squad.

We need a great right back, Cafu was never really replaced.

Hey guys, I will write tomorrow. I have been busy settling in to my new home, in Milan.

I was so impressed with Milan’s performance against Lecce. Aurelio is right, Max Allegri is perhaps our best signing. The team played exceptionally well, especially in the first half and Ronaldinho looks like he is in the mood.

Though i am not a big fan of ‘prince’, his energy and determination was a relief to see in a midfield that is too often lacking in both of these.

Kudos to gattuso, his work for the fourth goal was great but really the night belonged to Pato who showed that perhaps this season is his biggest yet.

    talk soon amici.

I just finished watching the inter game and it adds to my joy of having watched 90 minutes of Milan firing on all cylinders yesterday. To my eyes Milan played both intelligently and with a freshness and enthusiasm that is strange for a squad that still is quite old. This made for a much more entertaining game than the one I watched today. Inter seemed to be trying to grind out a result as per usual. Perhaps that will result in another title, but maybe their time at the top is over.

I am of the same thinking. Inter have not reinforced in the summer, their players are all a year over but the main factor in what may determine their downfall is the absence of Mourinho on the bench.

They do not look the champions they were last season and I think this have everything to do with Mourinho not being present any longer.

It too brings much more joy to me to see Inter stumble, Juve lose whilst we, to steal your words, fired on all cylinders.

Based on what we have seen in round 1, we have a great chance this season and with Ibra still yet to feature it can only get better. Also, it is rumoured that Robinho will sign on Tuesday and if does so then we can rest assured that our attack, for the season long, will be strong.

I am excited about this season, all of a sudden.
