AC Milan Match Reviews

Cassano Inspires Milan Rout of Parma

Yesterday Milan got their title challenge back on track with a comprehensive four nil victory over Chievo. Clarence Seedorf got the ball rolling with his opener before Antonio Cassano opened his account for the club with his first goal. In the second half Milan closed the game out with two goals from Robinho both superbly assisted by Cassano.

After last week’s dull draw away to Genoa where the Rossoneri looked short on ideas and imagination, Max Allegri made the necessary changes to spark life into his Milan side.

To achieve this, Cassano was chosen ahead of Pato and Alexander Merkel was included in the midfield three.

With Cassano present instead of Pato, Milan had a player who along with Seedorf – who was playing as the trequartista – had the ability to pick up and initiate attacking moves.

Cassano was fabulous on the night in a performance where he underlined his importance to Milan. Having managed to score his first goal for his new club after a delightful interchange with Gattuso, Cassano provided the two assists for Robinho to claim a second half brace. Milan really are a different team when their number 99 is on the field.

Merkel breathed life into a midfield that last week seemed unable to pass the ball forward. Playing alongside Mark van Bommel and Gennaro Gattuso, the young German’s ability to provide a link from midfield to attack greatly helped Milan in an attacking sense.

Merkel will have done his chances of receiving more playing time no harm at all with his performance. In my opinion, he is the type of player needed in the Milan midfield that at times is often too defensive, and with Andrea Pirlo out injured, he should be starting regularly already.

Milan were also strong in defence helped with the return of the unflappable Alessandro Nesta. Playing alongside Thiago Silva, Milan’s central defensive pairing were back to their best. The return of Nesta could not have come at a better time with the visit of Spurs just two nights away.

With the right players chosen and with everything clicking for Milan on the night it was a superb performance by Max Allegri’s men and one that will prepare them well for this week’s Champions League encounter with Tottenham.

    A brilliant performance indeed.
A part from the usual protagonists (Ibra,Binho,Thiago,Abbiati)the night gave important indications about:
    1) If Antonini is concentrated, he is still the best in his role
    2) The return of Nesta to his best
    3) VB is extraordinarly intelligent, tactically and technically.
    4) Merkel is the future
    5) Cassano has the feet of Rivera..
But the calendar (League and CL)is terrible.
Until Pirlo return (???) I would like to see:
    -Abate and Antonini full backs
    -Nesta and Yepes center backs
    -VB and Thiago central midfielders
    -Cassano and Binho behind Ibra
-Merkel (Pirlo) to liase in the middle.
    Pato must regain the field.
And let’s not forget that Cassano and the two Dutch can’t play in Europe…

I like your ideas Aurelio, I agree with all of them.

I really liked Thiago Silva in that midfield role. With the likes of Flamini and Gattuso in midfield, adding Thiago Silva makes much sense. MVB is also a great player.

Robinho and Cassano could be given freer roles, in which they could alternate from side to side and alternate being the player that drops deep to initate the attacks.

I would, however, like to see either Emmanuelso and/or Vila being deployed at left back. We bought these two players for this role so they should at least be tested there before we settle on Antonini.

    I don’t know Vila; and Emmanuelson defensively…boh !
As for Flamini, you know that I don’t like him at all. To me he is one of the greatest disappointments of the last decade (compared to expectations). I hope not to see him against Tottenham but I am afraid it will be the same midfield of the match against Genoa…

Of the decade? that is amusing because maybe it is true. It will be a defensive midfield, though I am hoping for Merkel to play.

if tonoght Allegri will field together Gattuso, Flamini and Seedorf it will be time, irrespective of result, to raise voice against him…
