Cassano comments overblown by media, Ibra the only concern

Cassano is clearly enjoying himself while Ibra wants to walk away

The news today surrounding the Milanello is about the apparent unsettledness of strike pair Antonio Cassano and Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Adriano Galliani has been forced to quell increasing speculation that the two are not happy.

Perhaps in the case of Ibra there is some truth. The player has in recent days expressed his lack of motivation and said he is already looking forward to retirement.

As for Cassano, he currently is enjoying a purple patch, or blue rather. He scored two goals for the Azzurri in their 3-0 Euro 2012 qualifying win over Northern Ireland which brought his tally to six goals making him the side’s number one goal-scorer of the campaign. Undoubtedly, he has been the star of Cesare Prandelli’s side as they impressed on their way to securing a spot in Ukraine and Poland.

Due to Milan’s early season injury crisis Cassano has also seen regular playing time under Max Allegri this season, in contrast to last. Despite the team’s poor results, the Italian has been the team’s most effective player thus far with his goals and creativity.

Yet, some media sources are claiming that in light of comments said after his match-winning display against the Irish, he is apparently unhappy and like his teammate is looking forward to retirement. Let’s review what Cassano actually said.

“I am happy to receive such compliments, it was about time. After 13 years in which I was criticised, a few nice words every now and then feel good,” he told Rai Sport.

“I feel fine, now I want to continue in the Italy team. Three years, I want to have three great seasons. Then I can stop. I think I will play football for only that time, have a good Euro 2012 finals and a good World Cup, then at the age of 33 call it a day so I can enjoy my family.”

“After the 2014 World Cup? That is my idea, I want to leave when the time is right. ”

Cassano then expressed gratitude to Italy coach Cesare Prandelli for his support.

“I have to thank Prandelli, he gave me a helping hand when I had everyone against me. I am thankful to him,” he said.

“When I retire, you can have fun with Mario Balotelli. He is another good character for you.”

These are not the words of a player tired and unhappy. On the contrary, they are of a man who seems quite level-headed (yes, I am saying this about Cassano), content and with enough fire in him to make his remaining years as a footballer memorable.

Milan fans have reason to be concerned about Ibrahimovic’s state of mind. But, as for our number 99, there are no such reasons.

As long as Allegri does not discard him again with the return of Ibrahimovic and Robinho to the side, Cassano will remain ‘fine’.

Like Galliani has said, “I don’t know how else to say this, I’m not worried.”
