With Antonio Cassano effectively ruled out for the season, barring a miraculous recovery – which I hope for – the club has decided that a new striker is needed.
Adriano Galliani has hinted as much, but, has said that if a striker does arrive it will only be temporary, i.e. on a loan.
“For sure if we bring a striker he will only join us on loan with an option to make the move permanent because we intend to keep a place for Cassano in the team.”
Reports surrounding who the club intends to chase have been circulating frantically and Galliani did not do much to quell the excitement when he said, “I believe Maxi Lopez is worthy of playing at Milan but so are other strikers.”
The player himself has admitted that he would welcome a move to the San Siro, as he was quoted by Corriere dello Sport, “I am aware of these rumours.
“But I don’t know anything more than that. If the Rossoneri want me then I’m ready.
“Milan are a great club, so it’s normal that I would like to play for them.”
Of course he would welcome a move to Milan, with all due respect to Catania, there is a big gulf between the two clubs, to be specific, a four-goal-to-nothing gulf.
While I would be happy to see a short term replacement come into the side, I would prefer if the club went out and brought in a natural attacking midfielder instead. Such a player would fill one of the three attacking positions, solve the problem of Cassano’s absence in doing so and could form part of the team’s long term future.
In a team that lacks a genuine attacking midfielder, why not?
Of the three players linked to the club, Didier Drogba and Fabio Quagliarella the other two, I would say Quags is the best fit, the most similar in style to Cassano. He is unhappy at Juve so I am sure the player would be open to a move.
I have to say I would seriously questions a move for Chelsea’s Drogba. He is now 33-years-old and though it would be just a short term solution, watching the Ivorian this season one thing is clear, he is way past his best. Once upon a time I would have been filled with excitement at such a move, but, Drogs days are now numbered.
